Fashion Trends for Summer 2013

The official start to summer 2013 this year is Thursday, June 20. However, most of us are already rocking our summer fashions to cope with the hot weather. After Memorial Day, it seems like white pants aren’t the only style favorite ending their winter hibernation!

And this year has not been disappointing in the number of new style trends for summer. There are some repeats of popular looks from summer 2012 – the high waisted shorts, bandeau/crop tops, etc. But also some new trends are really exciting and breaking some of my personal fashion boundaries a bit this season.

1. Almond shaped nails – made popular by style innovators like Rihanna, Lana Del Rey and the young Kardashian girls, this trend has really picked up speed through the spring. These ladies have taken a previously antiquated nail shape and transformed into a statement style.

2. Peplum Tops – Worn either as a dress or top, the peplum trend is so ladylike. The polished lines of the style can really dress up any piece, from shorts to jeans. Made popular by curvy celebs like Kim Kardashian and Fergie, this trend is really reaching the masses. Love this styled up Mulberry peplum seen on one of my fashion icons, Olivia Palermo.

3. Mixing prints & patterns – Last summer, patterned & printed pants/jeans/shorts were really making a statement. This summer the trend is encompassing shirt, dresses, and more. Particularly the pairing of different prints and patterns together. This is definitely a hard look to accomplish, but finding a color that coordinates two patterned pieces together can unite a mix-print look. Loving this styled version from Nanette Lepore. Only in spring/summer could one pull off a look like this!

4. Holographic accessories – Reminding me a bit of my 90s youth watching Zenon: Girl of the 21st Centurey, we’re seeing a lot of holographic accessories this summer. The trend is being embraced by designers both high & low. This pair of holographic sandals over at NastyGal are actually so cute. They could easily be incorporated practically as a neutral staple in a wardrobe this summer.

What do you think? Would you try any of these summer 2013 fashion looks?
