Crop Tops are so hot this summer. After making their big debut in summer 2012, they’re really taking off this year. You see them on red carpets, in major label collections, and all the way to the racks of Urban and Forever 21. Crop Tops are everywhere! But, I’m not sure I’m totally on board quite yet, and this why.
They need to be styled properly to avoid that “showing off way too much skin” look. It feels a bit like we’re back in the days of Britney’s Hit Me Baby One More Time. While I too wish we could still be living it up in the 90s, the fact is we’re not. And bare midriffs can still look a bit immature if not styled.
So how can the crop top be tailored to fit well into your wardrobe? I think taking a cue from some of the most stylish celebs can give some inspiration on how to best incorporate this look into the day to day. This interpretation by Gwen Stefani is so great for a night out. She pairs a white silk crop top with loose, black silk pants. The length of the pant and the mature heel really pull this look together and steer it clear away from too trashy.
Shay Mitchell also styles the trend well, going for the 2 piece matching look. This outfit she wore to the Much Music Awards in Canada is great inspiration for a summer day or night look. Great for a party, these bright colors really pop on her tan skin. I love especially that she paired a high waisted skirt with the crop top. It shows off just enough skin to be sexy without taking it over the edge. She’s also paired them with holographic heels, a hot trend for summer right now as well.
Some basic rules when rocking the crop top – pair with a high waisted bottom. The look is much more subtle and polished when your entire stomach isn’t hanging out. Accessorize with mature pieces. They elevate the entire look.
I found some great options for crop tops that you can easily begin incorporating into your daily style. I think the black options from TopShop are perfect for a nighttime going out look. The brighter options will really make a statement on a daytime summer outfit. What do you think, would you be daring enough to try a crop top?
